Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

Temporomandibular joint discomfort is often caused by muscle tension caused by teeth grinding or bruxism, anatomical irregularities, and traumas. There could be a psychological component. For example, some people clench their jaw during a period of emotional stress, strong determination, or despair. Many people are unaware that these muscles remain clenched for long periods of time. This clenching can cause TMD. Traditional Chinese Medicine can help relax not only your jaw muscles but you! By relaxing you and your muscles the pain and the root cause of the disease are addressed, to provide long-lasting pain relief.

Below are a few treatments that can help;

TMD Treatment with Acupuncture

Acupuncture needles are inserted into the trigger points of the masseter, lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, and temporalis muscles. These muscles are located near the ear, on the face, and on the jaw.  Trigger points trigger the muscle to relax. This relieves muscle spasms, discomfort and swelling, and the jaw is naturally released to allow the joint to move freely.  Acupuncture also reduces pain and inflammation by increasing the production of cortisol and other anti-inflammatory chemicals in the body.  These anti-inflammatory chemicals also help the body cope with stress by regulating the production and release of stress hormones including cortisol, noradrenaline, and serotonin into the blood stream.

Gua sha

Gua sha is a technique used to relieve muscle and joint tension. This procedure involves scraping the skin using a tool to create pressure. Through gua sha lactic acid and other toxins come to the surface of your body.  When these toxins are at the surface the lymphatic system can more easily drain them out of the body. This provides you with quick pain relief.

Electric stimulation

A machine is attached to acupuncture needles through a wire and clips. This machine is designed to stimulate muscles in the body by delivering a continuous electric pulse. By sending a very small electric current through a muscle the muscle can be trained to relax long-term. This treatment also helps to relieve muscle soreness, tightness, swelling.
